When buying a desktop computer there are many factors that you need to look out for, The main components you need to be aware of are the following.

CPU (Central Processing Unit E.G The Brain)
RAM (Random Access Memory - The More of this the better 2-4GB is Average for a new computer)
HDD (Hard Disk Drive - This is where all of your data is stored the larger the drive the more storage you will have)
OS (Operating System - This is your Windows. The new operating system Windows 7 is out on the 22nd of October but many machines still come with either XP PRO or Vista)

VDU - Monitor Screen

When purchasing a monitor there a few things you need to decide.

1) Screen Size - Standard Screen Size now is 19" if you use your computer for gaming or design or even just DVD'S and Media you may want to look for a 22" or a 24" Monitor.
2) Refresh Rate - This is important because the faster the refresh rate the better quality the image on the screen is and it’s better for your eyes if you are using it for long periods of time. - 1/2 MS is standard.
3) Interface - There are a couple of different interfaces for monitors ranging from VGA (Blue Plug - Older but still average Quality) DVI (White Plug - Better Quality)
